Whether it’s quality family time you’re after or a way to have a blast with friends without leaving the house, one sure way to sway the crowd is game night. Not only does it instantly include everyone in the fun, but also it provides an exceptional opportunity to play it up with a completely themed evening. Try any of these ideas and success won’t be a roll of the dice. It’ll be a sure thing.—Erika Lenkert
Word Games
If you’ve got word lovers in your midst, a great way to sharpen competitive edges is with a Scrabble, Boggle, or even Hangman championship. Reserve players’ places with drink glasses with alphabet stickers spelling out their names. Offer bowls of alphabet soup or pasta, with green side salads, and finish with blondies topped with letters written in icing.
Card Games
Poker, blackjack, gin rummy, Go Fish—it doesn’t matter what type of cards you play so long as your gang is game. Set the table classic style—with a big piece of felt fabric, a few votives, a box of bubblegum cigars, drinks served in rocks glasses with classic cocktail straws. Make a menu of BlackJacks (Monterey jack cheese and rye bread melts), or King crab salad sandwiches, add chips (get it?), and Lucky Seven cocktails (mix your favorite juice with 7up for family gatherings or add vodka for grownup goodness).
Board Games
There are so many board games out there only you know which is right for your fete. Once you’ve anchored your activity for the night, set the mood by creating trivia card placeholders for each guest (pose a question for them to answer in front of the group), allowing each guest to “purchase” their meal with Monopoly or other fake money, and finishing the eve with chocolates served on a checkerboard.
